Land of Long Ago

E. Stuart Hardy

FIRST EDITION OF THE LAND OF LONG AGO, 1890, WITH SIX SPLENDID FOLIO POP-UPS DEPICTING FAIRY TALE SCENES

(HARDY, E. Stuart) WEEDON, L.L. The Land of Long Ago. A Visit to Fairyland with Humpty Dumpty. London: Ernest Nister, [1890]. Oblong folio (12-1/2 by 10-1/4 inches), original half green cloth, original pictorial paper boards, patterned endpapers. $1850.

First edition of this 19th-century fairy tale pop-up book, with six striking folio pop-ups illustrated in rich Victorian style.

"Humpty Dumpty takes two little children into fairyland, where they meet their favorite characters. Featuring the stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and Beauty and the Beast, each accompanied by a full-page pop-ups" (Mantanaro, 152). Beautifully printed in Bavaria, this work—somewhat unusually—has six pull-down pop-ups, in which each pop-up has a fold-down flap that provides a stage for the scene.

Two pop-ups expertly reattached to book, slightest speckling to a few pop-ups, inner paper hinges expertly reinforced, very minor soiling and a bit of wear mainly to rear board. A near-fine copy.
