Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy

Hannah Glasse

"TO PRESERVE TRIPE TO GO TO THE EAST-INDIES…": 1770 EDITION OF HANNAH GLASSE'S ART OF COOKERY, HANDSOMELY BOUND BY BAYNTUN-RIVIERE

[GLASSE, Hannah]. The Art of Cookery, Made Plain and Easy. London: W. Strahan et al., 1770. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands. $1650.

Early edition of Hannah Glasse's famed cookbook, the standard culinary work of the 18th century, handsomely bound in three-quarter morocco-gilt by Bayntun-Riviere.

"The best seller in cookbooks for over 100 years" (Feret, 36), Glasse's cookbook gave "to inexperienced readers trying their hand at the more adventurous dishes" (Quayle, 69). Amid more commonplace fare are recipes for "catchup to keep twenty years," "The Jews way of preserving salmon," and instructions on "how to pickle ox-palates" and "how to make portable soop." First published in 1747. Bitting, 189. See Cagle 701.

Usual foxing to interior, unobtrusive toning to spine. An extremely good copy.
