"Chorlton's guides to cultivation of European grapes under glass were based on his experiences as gardener to J.C. Green of Staten Island. Chorlton gives a long list of European grapes suitable for indoor cultivation and suggests the American varieties isabella, catawba, diana and concord for outdoors. This was a very popular treatise and there were numerous subsequent and revised editions" (Gabler G1622). The first edition was published in 1852.
