Night Shift

Stephen King

"LET'S TALK, YOU AND I. LET'S TALK ABOUT FEAR"

KING, Stephen. Night Shift. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, (1978). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $3900.

First edition of King's first short story collection, inscribed by the author, "For Frank—Best, Stephen King, 11/1/80."

After the 1977 publication of The Shining, King began work on his next novel, The Stand. Recognizing the substantial time commitment required, Doubleday agreed to publish a short story collection, though limiting the initial printing to 1500 copies—half that of King's first book and one of the smallest print runs of any King first edition. Included in Night Shift, his fifth published book, are 20 of King's early stories, many previously published in Cavalier Magazine and others in Penthouse, Cosmopolitan, Gallery and Maine Magazine. Four appear here in print for the first time: "Jerusalem's Lot," "Quitters, Inc.," "The Last Rung on the Ladder" and "The Woman in the Room." Many stories became the basis of feature film adaptations, including "The Lawnmower Man," "Children of the Corn," "Graveyard Shift" and "The Mangler." "Night Surf" and "Jerusalem's Lot" provided the genesis, respectively, for The Stand (1978) and 'Salem's Lot (1975). With introduction by John D. MacDonald and foreword by King. Scarce first state, with "S52" on page 336 and dust jacket price "N.S. $8.95." Fantasy and Horror 6-201. Tymn 4-132.

A fine copy.
