Life of the Poet

Robert Graves

ONE OF ONLY 150 COPIES SIGNED BY TOMÁS GRAVES AND OTHERS

GRAVES, Robert. Life of the Poet Gnaeus Robertulus Gravesa. (Deià, Mallorca): New Seizin Press, 1990. 12mo, original vellum, uncut; pp. [24]. $300.

First edition of this posthumous fine press edition of this tongue-in-cheek "life of the poet" written by Graves in the style of a Latin biography in 1955, illustrated with title-page vignette, three full-page illustrations, and tailpiece, all hand-colored. One of only 150 copies, this copy marked "Artist's Proof" and signed in pencil by the illustrator Alice Meyer-Wallace, printer Tomás Graves, and binder Carmen García-Gutierrez.

Beginning in 1929, when Graves and his muse and mistress Laura Riding moved there, Graves spent many years of his life in Deià, Mallorca. Not long after arriving, he and Riding established the Seizin Press, largely to produce their own books of poetry. The present volume was coordinated by Graves' widow Beryl, his daughter Lucia (b. 1943) and his son Tomás (b. 1953), and published at Tomás' New Seizin Press, which Tomás established in 1983, producing hand-made books until 2000. Originally appeared in Graves' 1956 collection, ¡Catacrok!
