Living Room

Graham Greene

"FIERCE AND DRAMATICALLY ENTHRALLING"

GREENE, Graham. The Living Room. Melbourne, London, Toronto: William Heinemann, (1953). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. $425.

First edition in English, preceded by the Swedish edition, of Greene's controversial first play, a handsome copy in the original dust jacket.

Living Room, "Greene's first full-length work written for the stage," premiered in Sweden before its April 1953 London premiere (Hill & Wise, Works II:159). At the time Greene said, "One must try every drink once." Kenneth Tynan called Living Room "the best first play of its generation" and the Daily Telegraph praised it as "fierce and dramatically enthralling." In Living Room, "as in Greene's novels, the issues of faith and dogma at its core continued to make it controversial" (Guardian). First printing: with "First published 1953" on copyright page. "First published in Sweden, translated from manuscript, under the title I Sista Rummet (Stockholm: Norstedt, 1952)" (Miller 30).

Book fine; small closed tear, mild soiling to about-fine dust jacket.
