Street Haunting

Virginia Woolf

“IT IS ALWAYS AN ADVENTURE TO ENTER A NEW ROOM”: LIMITED EDITION OF STREET HAUNTING, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES SIGNED BY VIRGINIA WOOLF

WOOLF, Virginia. Street Haunting. San Francisco: Westgate, 1930. Octavo, original sage-green patterned paper boards respined in emerald green morocco, uncut. Housed in original slipcase. $2600.

Signed limited edition, first separate publication of Woolf’s lyrical essay, number 402 of only 500 copies signed by her, a lovely uncut copy in the much scarcer "green" variant, with sage-green patterned boards, emerald green morocco spine, and green cardboard slipcase.

Street Haunting, which focuses on a nighttime walk through London in search of a pencil, is one of Woolf's acclaimed city essays. Woolf's essay originally appeared in the Yale Review in October 1927; it was not published separately in the United Kingdom. Printed by the Grabhorn Press with hand-set type. Kirkpatrick states, "There is at least one variant of the binding in sage-green paper boards patterned in gold and darker green with emerald-green leather spine and a green slip-in case." David McGee, bibliographer of the Grabhorn Press, states, "the majority of the edition was bound in blue—ratio of 10 to 1 in favor of blue," which would indicate that only about 50 copies appeared in green. Kirkpatrick A13. Owner signature on slipcase, dated 1933.

An expertly respined copy of the elusive green issue of this signed edition in fine condition.
