ONE OF 100 COPIES SIGNED BY BETJEMAN
BETJEMAN, John. High and Low. London: John Murray, (1966). Small octavo, original white cloth, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $550.
Signed limited first edition, number 33 of only 100 copies signed by Betjeman, with frontispiece portrait and an additional photographic portraits.
"High and Low refers of course primarily to levels of churchmanship, but the sequence of poems in the volume suggests that it may allude to Betjeman's mood swings as well. Shortly before publication Betjeman suggested that Jocund and Blythe might be a better title, but Murray vetoed it, saying it was too late, and 'besides, your later thought would provide irresistible temptations to your imaginary enemies among the critics'" (Peterson A35.b).
A fine copy.
