But It Still Goes On

Robert Graves

"I WROTE A NUMBER OF LETTERS TO THE PRESS IN ANSWER TO MY CRITICS": ROBERT GRAVES' SEQUEL TO GOOD-BYE TO ALL THAT, 1930 FIRST EDITION OF BUT IT STILL GOES ON

GRAVES, Robert. But It Still Goes On. An Accumulation. London: Jonathan Cape, (1930). Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $650.

First edition, first issue, of Graves' follow-up to his critical and popular success Good-bye to All That, in scarce original dust jacket.

This volume includes Graves' lengthy "Postscript to 'Good-bye to All That'" along with three other prose pieces, including his tale of supernatural suspense "The Shout," extracts from his "Journal of Curiosities," and his play, "But It Still Goes On." "This book must be read rather as an appendix than as a progressive sequel to my recent autobiography… Nor, though I have said my good-bye to all that, do I wish to seem unaware that it still goes on, behind my back, so to speak, with every appearance of variety and experiment" (Foreword). "[Jonathan] Cape, although he published But It Still Goes On, did not like the book. Neither did Graves' parents… The aggressive tone of the pieces in But It Still Goes On had less to do with Graves' views on society than with the anger he felt towards his parents and his unease about abandoning his children" (Seymour, Robert Graves: Life on the Edge, 195). First issue, referring to "The Child She Bare" on page 157, deleted in later issues. Higginson A35. Bookseller label.

Text clean, mild discoloration to cloth spine only, near-fine; scarce unrestored original dust jacket with shallow wear to lower corners only and mild toning to spine, clean and bright and much nicer than often found, near-fine.
