Our Native Grape

C. Mitzky & co.

FIRST EDITION OF MITZKY'S OUR NATIVE GRAPE, WITH THREE COLOR PLATES OF GRAPES

C. MITZKY & CO. Our Native Grape. Grapes and Their Culture Also Descriptive List of Old and New Varieties. Rochester, New York: C. Mitzky, 1893. Octavo, original blue cloth. $2800.

First edition of this important treatise on the grape, with three chromolithographic plates of the Green Mountain, Brilliant, and Early Ohio varieties of grapes.

In the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture, Lydia Hyde Bailey refers to Mitzky's Our Native Grape as one of the "leading current works" on grape culture. This book comprises a comprehensive history of the grape, grape cultivation, hybridization, grape cultivation technology, and wine making. The author also offers an extensive dictionary of grape varieties from the Adelaide to the Zinnia, with their appearance, taste, and growing characteristics. Gabler 31090. Three additional plates have been tipped in—to the pastedowns and before the frontispiece—illustrating three more varieties of grapes (the Stark Star and possibly the Concord). Owner stamp.

Adhesion mark to chromolithograph of the Brilliant and facing page, slight scattered soiling to interior, a bit of wear and faint soiling to original cloth. A very good copy. Quite scarce.
