Hyperion

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“HE WENT ABROAD, THAT THE SEA MIGHT BE BETWEEN HIM AND THE GRAVE”

LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth. Hyperion: A Romance. Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1892. Octavo, 20th-century full red calf , raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $550.

Illustrated edition of Longfellow’s semi-autobiographical novel, with 30 photographic plates, handsomely bound by Tout.

After Longfellow's second sojourn in Europe, during which time his first wife died, he published this romance, interspersed with prose and verse concerned with German romanticism, which had greatly impressed him. In 1843, he married Frances Appleton, "the prototype of the heroine of Hyperion" (Hart, 443), whom he had met while abroad. First published in 1839. Bookplate.

A very handsome volume.
