Adventures of Robin Day

Robert Montgomery Bird

"YOU HAVE ROBBED ME OF MY VENGEANCE, BUT YOU HAVE SAVED MY LIFE!"

[BIRD, Robert Montgomery]. The Adventures of Robin Day. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1839. Two volumes. Octavo, original purple cloth, original paper spine labels. $400.

First edition, in original cloth.

Robert Montgomery Bird was a Philadelphia physician of many skills, writing successful plays for Edwin Forrest, teaching medicine, and editing newspapers besides his work as a novelist. "Robin Day, inspired by the Barnegat, New Jersey, 'wreckers,' who lured ships aground to plunder their cargos, has blood-curdling murders and criminal conspiracies aplenty" (Library Company of Philadelphia, "Philadelphia Gothic"). BAL 1162. Early owner signature to Volume I title page.

Text with some marginal dampstaining, original cloth toned, with wear and soiling to spine labels. A very good copy.
