Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor

Gabriel Garcia marquez

SIGNED BY GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ

GARCIA MARQUEZ, Gabriel. The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1986. Octavo, original navy cloth, original dust jacket. $1500.

First American edition of this fascinating series of newspaper articles from early in García Márquez's career, signed and dated by the author on the title page in green ink, "Gabriel 91."

This is García Márquez's journalistic account of a Colombian naval disaster in which eight crew members were swept overboard—only one survived, barely, washing up on a beach in northern Colombia some ten days later. This is his story, as reported by García Márquez in a series of 14 newspaper articles he wrote in 1955 for the Bogotá daily El Espectador. The full title reads: "The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor: who drifted on a liferaft for ten days without food or water, was proclaimed a national hero, kissed by beauty queens, made rich through publicity, and then spurned by the government and forgotten for all time." First published as a book in Spanish in 1970, as Relato de un Náufrago; also issued by Jonathan Cape in London in 1986, no priority determined. Translated from the Spanish by Randolph Hogan.

A fine signed copy.
