Doctor Fischer of Geneva

Graham Greene

"BRILLIANTLY ACCOMPLISHED HANDLING OF THE RUSSIAN ROULETTE THEME"

GREENE, Graham. Doctor Fischer of Geneva or The Bomb Party. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1980). Octavo, original black cloth, marbled endpapers, original slipcase. $450.

Signed limited first edition of Greene's richly allegorical novel about "the deadly sins of greed, pride and despair" (New York Review of Books), number 137 of only 500 copies signed by him.

In Doctor Fischer of Geneva, Greene tells "the tale of a rich man who uses his wealth to hurt others but who is eventually undone by his own schemes" (Shelden, Graham Greene, 379). The novel is a "brilliantly accomplished handling of the Russian roulette theme… broadening it into a parable about human greed, hate, compassion and salvation… a telling spiritual melodrama, streaked with black farce" (Guardian). In many ways it is "hardly a novel at all but rather a cautionary tale—almost an allegory—dealing in the most schematic fashion with the deadly sins of greed, pride, and despair" (New York Review of Books). As issued without dust jacket. Published the same year as American and English trade editions, no priority established.

A fine signed copy in the original slipcase.
