To Have and Have Not

Ernest Hemingway

“IF IT ISN’T ENJOYABLE—WHY DO IT?”: FINE FIRST EDITION OF HEMINGWAY'S TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT

HEMINGWAY, Ernest. To Have and Have Not. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4800.

First edition, first issue of Hemingway’s first novel since A Farewell to Arms, basis for the Howard Hawks film co-scripted by Faulkner and featuring Bogart and Bacall together for the first time, a lovely copy.

This novel, Hemingway's first since A Farewell to Arms was published eight years earlier, follows the life and adventures of Harry Morgan from rum-running to revolution. Brimming with criticism directed at American capitalism and the bureaucracy of the Roosevelt administration, the novel explores social circumstances and situations in Key West, "that paradise of the 'haves' and purgatory of the 'have nots." "In To Have and Have Not, Hemingway for the first time showed an interest in a possible solution of social problems through collective action" (Hart, 327). With Scribner "A" on copyright page; original dust jacket with black-and-white photograph of Hemingway by Joris Ivens on the back. Hanneman 14A. Grissom A.14.1.a.

Book fine; unrestored price-clipped dust jacket with minuscule rubs to spine head and corners, very nearly fine. A lovely copy.
