Typhoon And Other Stories

Joseph Conrad

“THERE ARE THINGS YOU FIND NOTHING ABOUT IN BOOKS”

CONRAD, Joseph. Typhoon And Other Stories. London: William Heinemann, 1903. Octavo, original slate-gray cloth. $650.

Preferred first English edition, second issue, of this collection of stories, including the thrilling titular novella, “generally thought to inaugurate Conrad’s period of artistic maturity.”

"This richly and consistently ironic tale is generally thought to inaugurate Conrad's period of artistic maturity" (Kermode, 9). This English edition includes three stories which did not appear in the earlier first American Typhoon: "Falk," "Amy Foster," and "To-morrow." After the New York publication, Conrad made final revisions to "Typhoon" before the present English publication. Second issue, without windmill device on title and with the half title canceled by the publisher. Of the first edition of 3000 copies, 1500 were issued domestically with the windmill device on the title page, and a second 1500 were prepared for colonial issue without the windmill device on the title page and with the words "Reserved for the Colonies only" on the verso of the half title. However, unexpectedly heavy orders from British booksellers necessitated the transfer of the colonial copies to the domestic stock, and the "colonial" half titles were removed. With two pages of preliminary advertisements and publisher's 32-page catalogue at rear. Binding B, measuring 106mm from the lower edge of "Conrad" to the upper edge of "Heinemann" on the spine. Cagle A8b. Smith 9. Wise 13.

Interior fine, cloth with only light wear to spine extremities, gilt bright. A near-fine copy.
