Salmagundi

Ernest Hemingway

"CERTAIN TO REVEAL UNSUSPECTED QUALITIES OF A SIMPLE MAN": LOVELY COPY OF FAULKNER'S SALMAGUNDI, WITH A POEM BY HEMINGWAY

FAULKNER, William. Salmagundi by William Faulkner and a Poem by Ernest Hemingway. Milwaukee: Casanova, 1932. Octavo, stiff paper covers, uncut, original slipcase. $2500.

Limited first edition, number 364 of only 525 numbered copies, a scarce copy of this representative collection of Faulkner's early writing, and including a brief poem by Hemingway.

In addition to Ernest Hemingway's four-line poem "Ultimately," printed on the back cover, Salmagundi contains three prose pieces and five poems by Faulkner. The final poem, "L'Apres-Midi d'un Faune," was Faulkner's first published work, appearing in the August 6, 1919 edition of The New Republic. The other works in this collection—the prose pieces "New Orleans," "On Criticism" and "Verse Old and Nascent: A Pilgrimage," and the poems "The Faun," "Dying Gladiator," "Portrait," "The Lilacs" and Hemingway's "Ultimately"—all previously appeared in the New Orleans magazine The Double Dealer. With mounted photographic frontispiece portrait of Faulkner, bearing his printed facsimile signature. Binding in second state as always (the first 25 copies, reserved for the authors and reviewers, were bound slightly differently, with the text block's top edges flush with the covers and bottom edges untrimmed). With publisher's slipcase, rarely found; without very scarce original dust jacket, as almost always. Peterson A11.

Book fine; rare slipcase with one small panel renewed.
