Mirror of the Sea

Joseph Conrad

"SO MUCH DEPENDS UPON THE CRAFT WHICH, MADE BY MAN, IS ONE WITH MAN"

CONRAD, Joseph. The Mirror of the Sea. Memories and Impressions. London: Methuen, (1906). Octavo, original green cloth, top edge gilt, uncut. Housed in a custom slipcase. $1250.

First edition of this collection of autobiographical essays and anecdotes from Conrad's seafaring days, in scarce first binding with uncut edges.

Conrad wrote of the book, "I have a special feeling for these pages. Twenty best years of my life went to the making of them." "The Mirror of the Sea is a book apart. It may be regarded as a farewell to twenty years of formative experience upon and with the sea—a revelation of inner feelings and a tribute to the memory of 'ships that are no more and to the simple men who have had their day" (Keating). The majority of the text had appeared previously in serial form before being collected in this volume. With 40 pages of publisher's advertisements dated August, 1906. Binding a, with top edge gilt and others uncut. Cagle A11.a. Keating 67, 68. Wise 16.

Interior clean, some light rubbing to spine ends, corners, and joints, cloth clean, gilt bright. An exceptionally good copy.
