New Bartender's Guide

Charles S. Mahoney

"A READY REFERENCE FOR STANDARD DRINKS—THOSE WHICH ARE CALLED FOR EVERY DAY, AND FREQUENTLY, IN EVERY BAR IN THE COUNTRY"

MAHONEY, Charles S. and MONTAGUE, Harry. New Bartender's Guide. Telling How to Mix All The Standard and Popular Drinks Called for Everyday. ISSUED WITH: The Up-to-Date Bartenders' Guide. A Valuable Ready Reference Guide to the Art of Mixing Drinks. Containing all the Standard and Popular Drinks, with a Choice Selection of Appropriate Toasts. Baltimore, Maryland: I. & M. Ottenheimer, (1913-14). 12mo, original pictorial green paper wrappers. $700.

First edition of this pocket-size bartender's guide, billed as "2 Books in One," with the first offering a complete list of recipes for basic drinks and the second comprising an updated list of recipes for trendy pre-war drinks and some useful toasts covering a variety of subjects, in fragile original wrappers.

Published by Ottenheimer, a prominent Baltimore publisher of hobbyist books on subjects from palmistry to card games, this handy bartender's guide contains dozens of recipes for rickeys, slings, smashes, and flips. While aspiring to cover the classics (and indeed covering favorites like the mint julep and the Manhattan), this guide offers fascinating insight into the drinking habits of Americans just prior to World War I. Early price and partially erased owner signature on front wrapper.

Interior generally quite nice with only slight folding to corners, light wear and soiling to wrappers. An extremely good copy.
