Rescue. A Romance of the Shallows

Joseph Conrad

"CONRAD'S ALBATROSS"

CONRAD, Joseph. The Rescue. A Romance of the Shallows. London & Toronto: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1920. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.

First English trade edition—the definitive edition—in the scarce original dust jacket.

"The Rescue was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career almost until the end of his life" (Cagle). Begun in 1898, Conrad did not complete the manuscript until 1919. After submitting it for publication, Conrad then revised it extensively, including changing the ending. Few of these changes were completed early enough to be included in the first American edition, which preceded the first English edition by one month, or the 40-copy privately printed English edition that was destined for reviewers, and was nearly identical to the American edition. Thus, it is this first English trade edition that is the definitive edition, with all of Conrad's edits included. A serialized version, very different from the book, was published in 1919. Cagle A49b2. Wise 57.

Book about-fine, unrestored dust jacket slightly toned at spine and edges, with a bit of creasing to spine head, front panel bright, exceptionally good. A very nice copy in the scarce dust jacket.
