Dow's Theory Applied to Business and Banking

Robert Rhea

"A HOUSEHOLD NAME ON WALL STREET": FIRST EDITION OF RHEA’S DOW’S THEORY APPLIED TO BUSINESS AND BANKING, 1938

RHEA, Robert. Dow's Theory Applied to Business and Banking. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1938. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $1250.

First edition of the final book by analyst Robert Reah, published the year after his early death, "he left an accessible theory and devout Dow descendants to continue his legacy" (Fisher, 100 Minds), a splendid copy in the original dust jacket.

Reah, who died soon after publication of Dow's Theory, his final book, "took an unrefined Dow Theory and whipped it into an updated, defined and systematic guide to the stock market, sparking theory into practice. In doing so he converted Charles Dow's rather abstract ideas and William Hamilton's applications… When he died in 1939 he left an accessible theory and devout Dow descendants to continue his legacy" (Fisher,100 Minds, 266). Reah "called the exact bottom of the bear market on July 8, 1932… He also called the turn (to the downside) in the bear market of 1937, and this feat, even more than his 1932 bull market call, made Reah a household name on Wall Street" (Dow Theory Unplugged, 8). "Rhea's seamless weaving of Hamilton and Dow's words into a thorough explanation of the theory's implications gives any reader a full opportunity to start their journey of exposure to Dow Theory" (Dow Theory Project). "First printing" stated on copyright page.

Book fine; only tiny bit of wear to spine end of about-fine dust jacket.
