Camera Crusade Through the Holy Land

Peter O'toole

A CAMERA CRUSADE THROUGH THE HOLY LAND, WITH 100 PHOTOGRAPHS, THE COPY OF PETER O'TOOLE

(O'TOOLE, Peter) ELMENDORF, Dwight L. A Camera Crusade Through the Holy Land. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1912. Octavo, original green cloth gilt, top edge gilt. $750.

First edition of this account of a journey on horseback through the Holy Land, with 100 photographic plates by the author, the copy of actor Peter O'Toole.

"In 1901 I started for the Holy Land with my ever-faithful camera on my back, my only weapon, simply to journey through the land with a desire to see for myself places mentioned in the Bible, to study ancient customs which still remain, and if possible to understand the significance of many sentences in the Scriptures which were very obscure to me and to those who tried to teach me." With map detailing Elmendorf's travels. This copy belonged to Peter O'Toole, who portrayed T.E. Lawrence in director David Lean's 1962 epic film, Lawrence of Arabia. "In the two-odd years it took to shoot Lawrence, [O'Toole] read all he could about the man, studied Bedouin culture, lived in a Bedouin tent, taught himself the essentials of Arabic and learned to ride a camel" (New York Times). Nominated as Best Actor for his now iconic turn, O'Toole lost the Academy Award to Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird); the film, however, won seven statuettes, including Best Picture. With O'Toole's bookplate.

Interior generally fine, mild soiling and wear to original cloth. An extremely good copy with a notable provenance.
