WONDERFUL TYPED LETTER WRITTEN BY JACKIE KENNEDY ONASSIS AND SIGNED BY HER TO PARIS ART BOOK PUBLISHER GEORGES HERSCHER

KENNEDY, Jacqueline. Typed letter signed. [New York], July 24, 1986. Single sheet of blue unlined stationery, measuring 5 by 7-1/2 inches. $1800.

Lovely signed typed letter written by Jackie Kennedy Onassis o art book publisher Georges Herscher thanking him for sending two books on Yves St. Laurent and congratulating him on producing "such beautiful books."

The letter, dated July 24, 1986. and typed on a sheet of Jackie Kennedy's address-embossed blue stationery, reads: "Dear M. Herscher, There are no words to express how grateful I am to you for sending me Yves St. Laurent et Le Theatre and Yves St. Laurent. You could not have thought of a present that would bring me more pleasure. It is the greatest joy to have two such beautiful books and I congratulate you on producing such fine volumes. Very Sincerely, [signed] Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis." The recipient, Georges Herscher, was an important art book publisher. Though he was the CFO of Hachette in the 1950s, he had more specialized aspirations. In 1971, he founded Editions du Chêne, publishing many groundbreaking works thereafter, generally in limited runs of 300-5000, including books devoted to André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene, Atget, Robert Doisneau, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Diane Arbus, and Rem Koolhaas (including his first work). In 1980, he founded his own eponymous publishing concern, which he also ran. He produced fine art books until 1987. Jackie Kennedy, together with her sister, Lee Radziwill, was a great fan of Yves St. Laurent fashion. When Jackie first met Aristotle Onassis in 1958, she was wearing an Yves St. Laurent dress while accompanying her husband to meet Winston Churchill aboard Onassis' yacht. Clearly, she made an impression. Jackie Kennedy, as a fashion icon, did much to help popularize Yves St. Laurent's famous pea coat, which debuted in 1962, and to keep the House's many other designs in the press.

Very faint original mailing crease. Fine condition.
