Of Flight and Life

Charles A. Lindbergh

OF FLIGHT AND LIFE, 1948, SCARCE FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION BY CHARLES LINDBERGH

LINDBERGH, Charles A. Of Flight and Life. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1948. Slim octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $2800.

First edition of this prophetic discourse on weapons of mass destruction by the famed aviator, inscribed on the half title by him in the year of publication, "To J— O— With best wishes from Charles A. Lindbergh August 1948."

In this Cold War-era essay, Lindbergh warns about the dangers of the Soviet Union and uncontrolled scientific advances without a moral compass acting as a guide. Of Flight and Life "sums up Lindbergh's concerns about the unchecked spread of scientific materialism and his fear that Americans were caught in a vicious circle in which our security today demanded regimentation and the development of weapons that would ruin us tomorrow" (Robert Wohl). With Scribner's "A" on copyright page. The recipient, John Oldrin, who was a friend of the Lindberghs, was president of Darien Library in Darien Connecticut, where the Lindberghs had a home.

Book fine; chip to spine head, edge-wear to very good dust jacket.
