Illuminated Painting of Saint Louis

Illuminated manuscript

BEAUTIFUL, VERY LARGE (ANTIPHONAL-SIZED) 16TH-CENTURY GERMAN ILLUMINATED PAINTING OF SAINT LOUIS, KING LOUIS IX OF FRANCE

ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT. Illuminated Painting of Saint Louis. Germany, 16th century. One vellum leaf, image measures 10-1/4 by 17 inches; leaf measures 14 by 20-1/2 inches; matted and framed, entire piece measures 20 by 26 inches. $22,000.

Splendid and very large 16th-century hand-painted illuminated portrait of King Louis IX of France, commonly known as Saint Louis. Handsomely framed.

This vellum leaf from a 16th-century German manuscript presents a richly hand-painted portrait of Saint Louis, King Louis IX, who reigned from 1226, at the age of 12 following the death of his father, until his own death in 1270. The portrait is rendered in vibrant hues of blue, gold, red, and green, with gold fleur-de-lis in the lower corners and background, and the sun and the moon in the upper corners. A nameplate in the lower margin reads "S. Luis Rey de França." A splendid and very large folio or even antiphonal-sized image.

A bit of the paint along the lower edge only has lifted, a bit of expected wrinkling to vellum, central image of Saint Louis clean and fine, coloring vivid, red only slightly toned. A beautiful and exceptionally large framed illuminated portrait in excellent condition.
