First editions of the First and Second Series of Paterson's collection of ballads and popular songs from Ayrshire, Scotland, each followed by his historical and biographical commentary.

Journalist James Paterson was born in Ayrshire in 1805, and worked for such newspapers as the Scots Times, the Kilmarnock Chronicle and the Glasgow Liberator, before finally settling in as editor of the Ayr Observer in 1839. In addition to the present collection, Paterson wrote and edited a number of volumes on Scottish poets and history, including Contemporaries of Burns and the More Recent Poets of Ayrshire (1840), Origin of the Scots and of the Scottish Language (1855), and The Life and Poems of William Dunbar (1860).

Interior clean, binding a bit scuffed. An extremely good copy.
