"A CLASSIC": STRAUB'S DRINKS

(COCKTAILS) STRAUB, Jacques. Drinks. Chicago: Hotel Monthly Press, [1920]. Small octavo (3-1/2 by 7 inches), original gilt-stamped brown cloth, patterned endpapers. $350.

Second edition of a timeless guide to cocktails and fine wine by famed wine steward Straub—"the 'go to' man for wine expertise in the early 20th century."

Drinks is "a classic" (Hotel Monthly, November 1920, 71). The Swiss-born "Straub was the 'go to' man for wine expertise in the early 20th century. Wine steward at Chicago's Blackstone Hotel and manager of the famous Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky," he authored Drinks as part of Hotel Monthly's "handbooks series" (Sandham, World's Best Cocktails, 268). Preceded by the 1914 first edition. Featuring nearly 700 cocktail recipes and a chapter on wines, this first posthumous edition (second overall) was published by his widow after the celebrated wine connoisseur's death in 1919. With eight pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. See LOC Catalogue I:2291.

Only minor soiling to cloth. An about-fine copy.
