Hand-colored Lithograph: Washington at Prayer

George Washington

19TH-CENTURY HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AT PRAYER

(WASHINGTON, George) KELLOGGS & THAYER, lithographer. Washington at Prayer [Hand-colored Lithograph]. Hartford, Conn.: Kelloggs & Thayer, circa 1846-47. Hand-colored lithograph, sheet measures 9-1/2 by 14 inches, early wood frame; entire piece measures 12-1/2 by 16-1/2 inches. $650.

Hand-colored lithograph of George Washington kneeling at prayer, with his hand on the Bible and his sword and spyglass laid on the floor, in a handsome early wooden frame.

In this image Washington, in uniform and in a campaign tent, rests his hand on the Bible while praying, with his sword and spyglass at rest but nearby. The Kellogg brothers were "the only group of whom it is at all possible to say that they were for a time near rivals of Currier & Ives" (Peters, America on Stone, 243).

Very faint dampstain along upper edge. Near-fine condition in a handsome early wooden frame.
