“PEACE IN OUR TIME IS THE MOST URGENT NEED CONFRONTING HUMANITY”: TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY HARRY TRUMAN TO A FOUNDER OF THE TRUMAN CENTER FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF PEACE IN JERUSALEM, 1965

TRUMAN, Harry. Independence, Missouri: : December 16, 1965. One leaf of letterhead measuring 7 by 10-1/2 inches, typescript on the recto, with original typed envelope. $1800.

Typed letter signed by Truman to prominent New York philanthropist Joseph Levy regarding the Center for the Advancement of Peace, the largest research institution in Israel to examine solutions for peace in the Middle East.

Levy was one of the founders of the Center for the Advancement of Peace. Truman writes, in part, "I will do everything I can toward the fulfillment of the high expectations envisioned for the Center. I hope and pray that the light of reason and tolerance will shine forth upon a divided and troubled world from this sanctuary." A month after this letter, it was announced the Center would be named in Truman's honor. "One cannot help but be struck by the aptness of its association with former President Truman, a man whose career was cast in the mold of so many of the heroes of ancient Jewish lore. Thrust into a position of awesome responsibility, seemingly without preparation, he became one of our great Presidents. Faced with the chilling necessity of having to make epochal decisions, the man from Missouri boldly and forthrightly acted where others might have vacillated. One of many such decisions which will enshrine the name of Truman in the memory of the Jewish people was his quick recognition of the State of Israel, barely 11 minutes after independence was proclaimed" (American Jewish Times-Outlook, September 1966). Today, located on the campus of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace "remains the largest research institute in Israel and the Middle East to examine conflict resolution and propose peaceful solutions for the region" (Truman Institute). With original envelope bearing Truman's printed free frank.
