Russian Projects Against India

H. Sutherland Edwards

FIRST EDITION OF RUSSIAN PROJECTS AGAINST INDIA: FROM THE CZAR PETER TO GENERAL SKOBELEFF, WITH LARGE FOLDING HAND-COLORED MAP OF THE RUSSO-AFGHAN FRONTIER

EDWARDS, Henry Sutherland. Russian Projects Against India. From the Czar Peter to General Skobeleff. London: Remington, 1885. Octavo, original gilt- and black-stamped pictorial green cloth, uncut and unopened. $1250.

First edition of this history of the Russians in Central Asia, written during the Great Game, with large folding hand-colored map of the Russo-Afghan frontier, in original cloth.

Written at a time when anxiety about the Russians was overtaking Britain, this work about Russia's engagement in Central Asia does little to put those fears to rest (and rightly so). Here, Russian correspondent for the Illustrated Times H. Sutherland Edwards tracks Russian history through Perovski's unsuccessful march to Khiva, Ignatiev's mission to Khiva and Bokhara, and Kauffmann's expedition to Khiva in 1873. The work shows Russia's clear involvement with Afghanistan and even British India. "Edwards and other writers who have been warning us for we know not how many years past of Russian aggression, have certainly the best of it, while the jokes about 'big maps,' and 'Mervousness,' and so on, have lost something of their force. In this volume the writer, who has made himself thoroughly acquainted with his subject, discusses the designs which have been made by Russian statesmen and soldiers in this direction 'from the Czar Peter to General Skobeleff.' A very curious mass of information has been thus put together, and we commend it to those who have to make a study of the subject" (The Spectator, contemporary review). Bookplate. Ink library number on title page.

Inner paper hinges repaired, light rubbing to cloth extremities. A near-fine copy. Scarce.
