First edition of this petition of the citizens of Alexandria to the Committee of the House of Representatives opposing any plan to unite the District of Columbia with Alexandria or Georgetown.

The memorialists voice their opposition to any plan which would unite the two parts of the district separated by the Potomac River. "The diversity of the views and employments of the citizens of Georgetown, Washington and Alexandria, is so great, that no subordinate legislature can be expected to give general satisfaction… Your Memorialists… do earnestly remonstrate against any plan whatever of a subordinate legislature, or subordinate executive, which shall unite under its power the two parts of the district, as separated by the Potomac."
