Commissioned by the Julliard School, Piano Fantasy uses the twelve-tone system sometimes adopted by Copland in his later compositions. "with his rich diversity and his unusual ability to move from one style to another, some listeners ask, 'Which is the real, truest Copland?' The answer is that each style of his varied output is an authentic expression of this particularly wide-ranging master. His distinctive voice is always pure Copland, be it the populist Lincoln Portrait (1942) or the experimental Piano Fantasy (1952-57)" (Dubal, Essential Canon of Classical Music, 614-15).
