Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo

Aaron Copland

SIGNED AND DATED BY AARON COPLAND

COPLAND, Aaron. Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo. London et al.: Boosey & Hawkes, circa 1961. 12mo, original wrappers, pp. 96. $500.

Hawkes Pocket Scores edition, inscribed by Aaron Copland on the title page, "Aaron Copland / 1983"

The orchestral suite, extracted from the ballet for concert performance, of Copland’s widely influential Rodeo, was more performed and written about than the ballet itself. The Four Dance Episodes, in total 18 minutes long, are: "Buckaroo Holiday," "Corral Nocturne," "Saturday Night Waltz" and "Hoe-Down." The Boston Pops gave the debut performance of three dance episodes in May, 1943, while the New York Philharmonic gave the first performance of the entire suite in July, 1943. “The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo commissioned the choreographer Agnes de Mille and the composer Aaron Copland to collaborate on the creation of a western ballet for its 1942-1943 season. Originally sub-titled The Courting at Burnt Ranch, Rodeo was first produced at the Metropolitan Opera House on October 16, 1942” (Introductory Note).
