One of Copland's most important pieces, Sextet (for string quartet, piano, and clarinet) is a version of his Short Symphony composed in response to the complaint that symphony was unperformable—a complaint made by both Stokowski and Koussevitzky. It is in this form that the piece is most often heard today. First published in 1937.
