El Salon Mexico

Aaron Copland

SIGNED AND DATED BY AARON COPLAND

COPLAND, Aaron. El Salon Mexico. London et al.: Boosey & Hawkes, circa 1967. 12mo, original wrappers, pp.44. $500.

Hawkes Pocket Scores edition, signed and dated on the title page, "Aaron Copland / 1984."

“As the world economic and political crisis deepened, Copland intensified his concerns for explicit social significance, for the theatre and for school music… A relaxed and [well]-known expression of related concerns is El salon Mexico (1936), which led to Copland’s permanent contract with Boosey & Hawkes” (Grove 4:720). While touring a small Mexican town in 1935 on a visit to a friend, Copland came upon a dance hall called El salon Mexico. The Mexican folk songs the mariachi band played there inspired the composer to write a symphony that combined folk songs into a full orchestra piece; the sound made him famous. The full score was first published in 1939.
