View of the Earth

TURNER'S 1771 GEOGRAPHY, WITH FINELY HAND-COLORED MAPS AND ENGRAVINGS

TURNER, Richard. A View of the Earth: Being a Short but Comprehensive System of Modern Geography. London: S. Crowder, 1771. Small folio (7-1/2 by 12 inches), period-style full speckled calf gilt, black morocco spine label, raised bands. $3000.

Third edition of Turner's geography, with seven full-page maps, one full-page plate and ten in-text engravings—all hand-colored—one with a moving volvelle depicting time differences around the world.

Reverend Turner was a Worcestershire clergyman who also taught science and mathematics. In addition to his View of the Earth, he produced textbooks on astronomy, trigonometry, and chronology, as well as a grammar and a dictionary, all featured on the two pages of advertisements following the title page. First published 1762.

Occasional faint foxing, plates generally clean with fine hand-coloring, volvelle stitching renewed. An extremely good copy, desirable with volvelle intact.
