History and Topography of the United States

John Howard Hinton

EARLY EDITION OF HINTON’S HISTORY AND TOPOGRAPHY, WITH SEVEN FOLDING MAPS AND 58 ENGRAVED PLATES

HINTON, John Howard. The History of the United States. London: J. & F. Tallis, circa 1850. Two volumes bound in six. Quarto, publisher's navy cloth gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, uncut and partly unopened. $2200.

Early edition of Hinton’s popular illustrated history of the United States, with engraved title page, seven folding maps outlined in color, a folding facsimile of the Declaration of Independence, and 58 full-page engraved plates depicting American cities, landmarks, and significant events.

An English Congregational minister, Hinton advocated religious tolerance and the abolition of slavery. His popular History and Topography first saw publication in 1834. Many editions followed. Readers especially valued the work for its engravings, 99 of which had been included in the first edition. The work is divided into two halves—History and Topography; "History" is continuously paginated in volumes I through IV, and "Topography" is continuously paginated in volumes IV through VI. See Howes H512; Sabin 31966. Small label to front board of volume IV.

Scattered foxing; light dampstaining to plates in volume IV. Bindings lovely, gilt exceptionally bright and beautiful. An extremely good set.
