Godstone and the Blackymor

T. H. White

"THE GODSTONE HAD BEGUN TO FASCINATE ME": SIGNED BY T.H. WHITE

WHITE, T.H. The Godstone and the Blackymor. London: Jonathan Cape, (1959). Octavo, original boards, original dust jacket. $850.

First English edition of this illustrated collection of autobiographical stories and sketches based on White's time in Ireland, signed by White on the title page beneath his printed name, which he has crossed out.

"A series of short autobiographical stories about White's great passions in Ireland: the joys of salmon fishing, goose shooting and hawking, but also his shame at killing innocent animals. The two outstanding stories describe White's investigations on a mysterious Godstone in the island of Inniskea and an unexpected encounter in a village guest-house of a mountebank selling patent medicines. The book is based on White's Irish diary for the year 1940 in a very long copy-book written in different colored inks with drawings by White and postcards pasted in. It also includes several poems" (Gallix). Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. Preceded by the New York edition of the same year. Gallix A21.

Book fine, dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing at extremities, near-fine. A lovely copy, scarce and desirable signed by White.
