Master

T. H. White

"YOU'RE IMAGINING IT! YOU'RE MAD! YOU'RE HYPNOTIZED!"

WHITE, T.H. The Master. An Adventure Story. London: Jonathan Cape, 1957. Octavo, contemporary full dark green morocco, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $400.

First edition of White "adventure story"—finely bound presentation copy from the library of Michael Howard, who helped edit the novel for publication.

"Twelve-year-old twins Nicky and Judy and their dog Jokey are marooned on Rockall island, but their parents believe they have drowned. They are held prisoner inside the rock where 'The Master' is hatching terrifying plots to unite the world under his rule. 'The Master' can read other people's minds and hypnotize them into obedience. Due to his advanced age (157), he can hardly speak and only in Latin or proverbs… In March 1956 he was revising the MS, and in particular, at Patricia Howard's advice, was simplifying the language (letter from David Higham [White's literary agent] to Michael Howard, March 16, 1956)" (Gallix). White also dedicated another copy specifically to Patricia: "To Patricia Howard who rewrote the whole book as she suppressed the long words." Gallix A19.

Spine gently sunned. A fine presentation copy.
