“THE MOST ORIGINAL AND BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE TWENTIES”: THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS

TIMLIN, William M. The Ship that Sailed to Mars. A Fantasy. London: George G. Harrap, [1923]. Large quarto, original half vellum, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, gray paper-covered boards. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition, English issue (preceding the American issue) of this “magical combination of science fiction and fairyland,” lavishly illustrated with 48 mounted full-color plates and 48 mounted pages of calligraphic text, all by Timlin.

“Excelling the production values previously lavished on Willy Pogany and Harry Clarke, George Harrap published this huge and magnificent volume in November 1923, finely bound in half vellum richly decorated in gilt. The book contained 48 superb color plates by the artist, alternated throughout with 48 leaves adorned with his fine calligraphic and poetic text. These pieces of art were all mounted by hand on gray matte paper, reminiscent of Harrap’s best pre-war editions de luxe… Timlin’s fantasy is a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland. His watercolors equal the best work of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson” (Dalby, 102). “The book’s strength [rests] on its exotic descriptions and beautiful illustrations” (Clute & Grant, 949-50). Only 2000 copies were produced, of which 250 copies were distributed in America by Frederick Stokes the following year. Without rare original dust jacket.

Scattered marginal toning to mounts only, plates fine; occasional marginal paper repairs. Expected mild foxing to vellum, boards lightly rubbed. Near-fine condition.
