Wine, The Vine, and the Cellar

“ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING BOOKS WE HAVE ON THE SUBJECT”: SHAW’S ILLUSTRATED WINE, THE VINE, AND THE CELLAR

SHAW, Thomas. Wine, the Vine, and the Cellar. London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1863. Octavo, original gilt-stamped pictorial green cloth. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase.

First edition of Shaw’s guide to wine collecting, with 28 in-text illustrations.

“One of the most interesting books we have on the subject… Shaw’s wit, sense of humor and love of wine pervades every page. Although there is much historical data, of real interest in the book are Shaw’s reminiscences and anecdotes of his 42 years in the wine trade” (Gabler, 244-5). Shaw talks about Britain’s duties on wine, which he was credited with reducing. With descriptions of wine from Europe, the Americas and Australia. With advertisement leaf at rear. Bookplate and title page owner signature of George Yule, a British statistician who worked with the Ministry of Food during the First World War.

Small paper repair to front blank, inner paper hinges expertly reinforced, light dampstaining to lower rear corner and some darkening to spine, faint staining to extremities of cloth, gilt bright. An extremely good copy. Scarce.
