SCUTTS, Jerry. Lion in the Sky. US 8th Air Force Fighter Operations 1942-45. Wellingborough (UK): Patrick Stephens, (1987). Quarto, original cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of this illustrated chronicle of the US 8th Air Force’s fighter operations in the ETO, signed on a specially designed “The Mighty Eighth” bookplate by 12 fighter pilots—at least eight of them aces—including renowned aces “Gabby” Gabreski, Robin Olds, “Kit” Carson, Walter Beckham and Edwin Heller.
Signed on a specially designed “The Mighty Eighth” bookplate by aces Francis “Gabby” Gabreski, Walter C. Beckham, Gerald Brown, Edwin Heller, Kit Carson, Robin Olds, Joseph Houtson Bennett, Urban Drew, and four others, possibly also aces, certainly fighter pilots of the Eighth Air Force. Signer Francis “Gabby” Gabreski is credited with 34-1/2 victories in WWII and Korea, making him one of only seven U.S. combat pilots to become an ace in two wars. Robin Olds reached a combined total of 16 victories in WWII and Vietnam, 12 of those in WWII. By mid-February of 1944, Walter Carl Beckham had racked up 18 victories, at that time tops in the ETO. On February 22, however, he was hit by flak and bailed out. He was captured and remained a POW until April, 1945. Edwin Heller recorded six aerial victories in WWII and another 3-1/2 flying the F-86 Sabre in Korea before being shot down in China and taken prisoner, an ordeal that he survived. Leonard “Kit” Carson was the top scorer of the 357th Fighter Group with 18-1/2 victories. Flying the P-51 Mustang, Urban Drew notched six victories, including two Me-262 jets. Joseph Houston Bennett recorded 8-1/2 victories, and Gerald Brown, five.
