Symphony in B Flat ('Unfinished')

“IT WAS MUSIC LIKE NO OTHER EVER HEARD BEFORE”: VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF SCHUBERT’S UNFINISHED SYMPHONY

SCHUBERT, Franz. Zwei Sätze der unvollendeten Sinfonie in H moll. Partitur. Wien: C.A. Spina, 1867. Small quarto, modern half black morocco gilt, 19th-century cloth boards, original top wrapper mounted on front board.

First edition, fully engraved, of the full score to Schubert’s unfinished masterpiece.

Why Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony is unfinished is one of the great mysteries of classical music. The two movements he finished contain some of his most brilliant work, which he surely knew, yet in 1823 he gave the manuscript to Joseph Hüttenbrenner, who in turn gave it to his brother Anselm, with no apparent expectation that it would be performed. It was not until 1860-22 years after Schubert’s death-that Anselm made a piano duet arrangement of the two completed movements, and another five years before the original composition was finally performed. “Listening today to the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony one is struck immediately by its flowing lyricism and its wealth of melody. One feels it to be inconceivable that Schubert could not have realized he was creating a masterpiece. How could he, one wonders, simply have set it aside and failed to return to it? None of the explanations offered by critics and biographers is completely satisfactory” (Osborne, 93). The completed movements were “altogether new in melodic style, the bold mixture of breadth and concision in their structure, and the warm glow of their orchestral sound. It was music like no other ever heard before” (Steinberg, 479). Fuld, 567-68.

Scattered light foxing, a bit of soiling to lower outer corner of pages. Original top wrapper mounted on front board, with rubbing to extremities. Very scarce.
