“BABE RUTH & ‘MOMMIE”: SCARCE 1933 PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED BY BABE RUTH

RUTH, Babe. Photograph signed. Bath, Maine: Douglas Photo Shop, [1933]. Vintage photographic print (8 by 10 inches), signed on the image, photographic studio inkstamp to print verso.

Vintage black-and-white photographic print of Babe Ruth and his wife Claire, boldly signed “Babe Ruth & Mommie,” a wonderful image of the couple together on a hunting trip to Maine in 1933, the year Ruth hit a home run in the first All-Star game to win it for the American League.

Babe Ruth is baseball’s “gold standard. ‘No man has ever lived who hit a baseball as hard as Ruth,’ Damon Runyon wrote.” Ruth, who began as a pitcher for the Red Sox, soon joined the Yankees, where he led them to seven World Series and four championships and became an American legend. He was one of the first five players elected to the Hall of Fame. This scarce 8-by-10 black-and-white photographic print was taken in late November 1933, when Ruth, his wife and their friends spent several days deer-hunting as a guest of Mrs. Isabelle Morrill. As reported in newspapers on the 27th of that month, “Babe Ruth came to Maine today to find out whether he can use a 30-30 rifle as skillfully as he wields a baseball bat” (New York Times). In this vintage photograph signed “Babe Ruth & ‘Mommie” across the lower third of the image, the baseball legend and his wife Claire are strolling along a wooded path toward the camera. Babe has a rifle casually slung over his right shoulder as his wife, her arm linked in her husband’s, smiles warmly at the camera. With photographic studio inkstamp on print verso: “Douglas Photo Shop, Bath, Maine.”

A fine signed photograph.
