“NONE HAVE SURPASSED HIM”: REMINGTON’S FRONTIER SKETCHES

REMINGTON, Frederic. Remington's Frontier Sketches. Chicago: The Werner Company, (1898). Oblong quarto, original illustrated white beveled paper boards, all edges gilt.

First edition of one of the rarest of Remington’s books, with 15 full-page half-tones after Remington’s sketches, guarded by parchment sheets with red letterpress captions. A lovely copy.

The work of Frederic Remington, consummate illustrator of the American West, “is notable for its swift action and rendering of character. His Indians are Indians: his Apache is an Apache, his Sioux is a Sioux. His American soldiers in the field are splendid… Though there were delineators of the West and frontier before Frederic Remington—notably Karl Bodmer, F.O.C Darley, George Catlin… none have surpassed him” (DAB). The plates here depict battle scenes between the U.S. cavalry and Plains Indians. Without scarce publisher’s box. Howes R206. Contemporary presentation inscription.

Rear inner paper hinge cracked, binding sound and bright with just a touch of rubbing to extremities. Near-fine condition.
