The enfant terrible of the Russian music world, Prokofiev was one of the most notable contributors of his time to the concerto genre. This particular quotation is from Quartet, opus 50, better known as String Quartet No. 1, composed in 1930. “The years 1932-36 saw great flux and change in Prokofiev’s life. It was a time of decision for him: whether to return to the U.S.S.R. and become a Soviet citizen, or to remain, as Stravinsky and Rachmaninov had done, in the west [specifically, in Paris] as an émigré… It was not until spring 1936 that he was permanently resident in Moscow” (New Grove 15: 294-95).
