“THE LAST OF THE GREAT EXPLORATIONS OF THE AMERICAN WEST”: POWELL’S LANDMARK EXPLORATION OF THE COLORADO RIVER, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS AFTER THOMAS MORAN

POWELL, John Wesley. Exploration of the Colorado River of the West and Its Tributaries. Explored in 1869, 1870, 1871, and 1872. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1875. Quarto, period-style three-quarter tan calf gilt, red and green morocco spine labels, marbled boards.

First edition of Powell’s report, “the last of the great explorations in the American West” (Westward, 210), with two large folding maps (one topographical and one profile) and 80 wood-engraved views on 72 plates, many after paintings by Thomas Moran.

Powell’s series of groundbreaking explorations of the Green and Colorado Rivers began on May 24, 1869, when he and a party of ten men embarked in four boats at Green River City, Wyoming, and headed south toward the largely unexplored Colorado. By late August, after enduring harrowing rapids and several nearly fatal accidents, as well as being perilously low on supplies, Powell and his men emerged from the Grand Canyon at Callville. Their success was the basis for several repeat expeditions led by Powell, during which he discovered the last unknown river (the Escalante) and the last unknown mountain range (the Henry Mountains) in the United States. “He achieved a profound insight into the real character of the West… This book of 1875 is one of the most justly celebrated documents in the literature of exploration” (Wheat V:362, 357). Powell’s pioneering scientific and natural history data are accompanied by novel and striking illustrations of the landscape and peoples of the Grand Canyon, many after paintings by Thomas Moran. Folding maps housed in a pocket at rear. Howes P528. Graff 3336. Sabin 64753.

Faintest foxing and two small tears to folding maps, a few spots of soiling to interior. An extremely good copy.
