NUTTALL’S NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA, CONTAINING 121 HAND-COLORED PLATES, IN SPLENDID PUBLISHER’S CALF-GILT

NUTTALL, Thomas. The North American Sylva… Not Described in the Work of F. Andrew Michaux. Philadelphia: Robert P. Smith, 1853. Three volumes. Tall octavo, contemporary full green pebbled calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, pictorially gilt-stamped covers in floral designs, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Splendid 1853 edition of Nuttall’s continuation of Michaux’s landmark work, richly illustrated with 121 wonderful hand-colored lithographic plates, beautifully bound.

The continuation of Michaux's Sylva was executed by Thomas Nuttall, an experienced American botanist and ornithologist whose Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and Canada (1832) rivaled Audubon and Wilson in terms of strictly scientific contributions. First published from 1842 to 1849, Nuttall's botanical work added 121 hand-colored plates to the 156 originally issued in Michaux. With this addendum, Sylva "is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled beauty, giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America, from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle" (Sabin). Plates in Volume I are complete, but the numbering omits 30 and 31, and instead includes additional plates at numbers 5 and 10 (60 total plates in Volume I, as issued). See Nissen 1458; Sabin 56351. Armorial bookplate of John Amory Lowell, American businessman and philanthropist from Boston, one time trustee of the Lowell Institute.

Text and plates clean and bright, with only faint foxing to first few leaves, several joints expertly reinforced. An especially beautiful set in fine condition.
