SIGNED BY CARL SANDBURG: HIS LANDMARK LINCOLN BIOGRAPHIES
(LINCOLN) SANDBURG, Carl. Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years. Two volumes. WITH: The War Years. Four volumes. New York: Harcourt, Brace, (1926, 1939). Together, six volumes. Octavo, original navy cloth gilt. Housed in a custom slipcase.
First trade editions of Sandburg’s celebrated biographies of President Lincoln, signed on the half title by Sandburg in Volume I of The Prairie Years, a scarce six-volume set handsomely housed in a custom slipcase.
Sandburg grew up in the Knox County neighborhoods with which Lincoln was familiar; the poet met people whom knew Lincoln not only as a politician but also as a man. "The most popular Lincoln biography yet written… Lincoln publications increased after the appearance of this work" (Monaghan 2877, 3711). This handsome six-volume set contains the scarce first trade editions Sandburg's two-volume Prairie Years and his four-volume War Years; the latter earning Sandburg his second of three Pulitzer Prizes. Preceded by the same years' signed limited editions. Illustrated with hundreds of photographic plates and numerous additional cuts of maps, cartoons, letters and documents. Without scarce dust jackets, original slipcases. Howes S81, S82. War Years with owner inscriptions dated year of publication (Vols II-IV).
Prairie Years near-fine with light scattered foxing, faint occasional marginal dampstaining; War Years fine. An exceptional set.
