“WHAT IT’S GOT MOST OF IS GLORY!”: FIRST EDITION OF BATTLE CRY, SIGNED BY LEON URIS

URIS, Leon. Battle Cry. New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, (1953). Octavo, original black paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of Uris’ famous first novel, signed by him, in original dust jacket.

Based on his experience in WWII, Uris’ Battle Cry was rejected by over a dozen publishers, but on publication became an immediate success and led to his authorship of the screenplay for the 1955 film. To writer Pete Hamill, Uris remained first and foremost “a storyteller… The subject is man, not words; story is all” (New York Times). Bruccoli & Clark IV:385.

Book with only a bit of marginal soiling and slightest rubbing to boards. Dust jacket with a few spots of unobtrusive foxing and minor edge-wear. A near-fine signed copy.
